Caverion developing the energy efficiency of the City of Vantaa in Finland

The City of Vantaa has selected Caverion as its partner in cooperation for developing the energy efficiency of properties. The technical building systems of 12 of the city’s properties are being modernised as part of the ESCO project. The measures are being financed through the savings gained from the modernisation with a payback period of around 5 years. The total value of the contract is EUR 1.5 million and the savings goal is over 5,000 MWh/a.

“The City of Vantaa is committed to an energy savings of 7.5% by 2025, as stated in the energy-efficiency agreement. The ESCO project, which has now been initiated, plays an important role in achieving the new objectives. From the city’s perspective, it is good that the project involves renewing the technology in properties with financing gained from the energy efficiency achieved,” says Project Manager Marita Tamminen from the City of Vantaa.

Aiming to 20% annual savings

The project involves renewing the lighting and ventilation of the properties, replacing the oil-based heating system in the school with a geothermal heat solution and improving the control functions of the building systems related to energy efficiency. The objective is to achieve an annual energy savings of 20% compared to the previous level, which will mean around EUR 4.7 million in savings over a 15-year lifespan. Carbon dioxide emissions will also be reduced by 1,317 tonnes per year. After the investments and alterations, Caverion will be responsible for the facilities’ energy-savings and the optimisation of energy efficiency, and the company will also give an energy-saving guarantee to the facilities covered by the contract.

“With the ESCO service, we ensure that the building systems will be modernised in a way that supports energy efficiency. Remote monitoring of properties guarantees that adjustments are being made sensibly and the building systems work correctly. Our contract also includes energy savings training for the personnel working at the properties,” says Project Manager Tuukka Vainio of Caverion.

Caverion has implemented ESCO projects for Finnish municipalities in Jyväskylä, Kuopio and Turku, among others.  In addition, Caverion has implemented broader ESCO and EPC project clusters in the other Nordic countries. The ESCO service is suitable for municipality projects that can be funded principally or entirely through the energy savings achieved by the project, meaning that the projects can also be financed as procurements outside of the maintenance budget.
